Seeing Yourself Clearly

Some tips on achieving the impossible

———

As children, we are conditioned to please our parents, our teachers, and everyone above us. We are taught to see ourselves through their eyes, never our own. Unfortunately, many of us never grow out of this mindset.

We are unable to do anything without considering how it appears to those around us. Being conditioned, it is very difficult to see ourselves with our own eyes. It is disconcerting to see oneself without the sneers or approval of some crowd. Like walking off a cramped stage—it is uncomfortably quiet at first. The distant hollers and huzzahs are only echoes in your mind. Your emotions have a strange new potency and your true desires surprise you. You don’t feel what everyone else feels anymore. You don’t want what everyone else wants.

As you become familiar with this alien tranquility, you realize that you are free to look at yourself solely with your own mind. Now you are the judge, not the thousands of other faces you once gave power to. So what do you hear in the silence? Looking through the most immediate of all human lenses—your own mind—what do you see?
